President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, is the best and only solution to the challenges of admission into conventional universities in Nigeria. Mr. Buhari was speaking Saturday at the seventh convocation ceremony of N OUN held at its headquarters in Abuja. “Open Distance Learning is the best alternative to the challenges of gaining admission into the universities in Nigeria,” the president said. “All the conventional universities cannot admit more than one-third of qualified candidates annually. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Thursday directed all tertiary institutions to end their 2017 admission by January 25. The Board’s Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja. Benjamin said the board’s decision came after a meeting where all issues and ones bordering on the admission process were taken into consideration. He said it was resolved that the academic calendar must be adhered to. The Management of the University of Benin has approved that there would be no increase in the fees/charges paid by all returning students for the 2017/2018 academic session. The University Management is also reviewing the decision that led to the suspension of the Students’ Union Government of the University of Benin, as all issues pertaining to the students‘ protest in November, 20l7, have been addressed. The Governing Council has approved #l.000.00 (one thousand naira) as Students Union dues for all returning students. The board made this disclosure in a statement signed by its Head of Media, Mr Fabian Benjamin and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja. “As we prepare for the 2018 examinations, beginning with the optional mock, we urge candidates to register on time, make clear their choices of institutions, disciplines and examination centres in the process. “Candidates must note that their first choice can be a College of Education, a university, an Innovation Enterprise Institution, a polytechnic or a monotechnic. “Others include, the Nigerian Defence Academy or the Police Academy. “We will conduct a better examination, ensure more transparent admission and make more remittances to the government”, he said.
